So why
are you here again? Don't panic. Supplemental Health
Plans can cover many different types of medical hospital
stays. Although they cover all kinds of
hospitalizations, they just so happen to also cover
maternity - but some of the plans have a 10 month
waiting period meaning you must deliver sometime after
being on the plan for 10 full months. The companies that
offer supplemental plans change now and then. Some
have recently decided not to offer these hospital
indemnity plans any longer (Aflac, Assurity, AHL,
Allstate, Time, Conseco and Fidelity Security Life to
name a few!) The agents we work with constantly
scour the market to see what plans work best with the
insurance plans offered. Study your insurance
policy contracts for limitations, exclusions and
details. |

This most recent case was submitted by Susan & Mike
(names changed for security:) of Murray Utah on May 3rd
2010. Thanks!
Background
Susan and Mike are both 28 years old and they want to
have another baby. They live in the Salt Lake Valley and
Mike is self employed. Susan stays at home and cares for
their 2 children ages 5 & 3. They have always had normal
deliveries, so they expect to have another normal 2 day
stay in the hospital with no complications.
They have a private health insurance plan for which
their premiums have now risen to over $550/month. They
have had the plan for 5 years and like it, but it is
pretty pricey now. It has a $1,000 deductible for
medical but a $7,500 maternity deductible (separate and
distinct from their medical deductible). It then pays
100% of their maternity bills after the $7,500 is met.
But they also realized that the baby will also be
charged a medical deductible and coinsurance as soon as
they are born.
They did some research guided by their insurance broker
whom they were guided to through this site. Andrew
ran through their situation and between the three of
them determined the following costs for their
contemplated future maternity.
They like the HSA concept, but apparently there are no
private HSA plans that cover maternity.
Estimated
Current Plan Maternity Costs
Monthly Premium: $550/month
Normal Delivery Cost Estimate: $7,500
Baby Costs (Nursery Charges, etc) $1,500
Total Cost Estimate: $9,000

Estimated New
Plan Maternity Costs
Total Monthly Premium: $256/month (Savings of almost
$300/month)
Normal Delivery Cost Estimate: $5,500
Baby Costs (Nursery Charges, etc) ZERO (Covered in mom's
stay)
Total Cost Estimate: $5,500 (Savings of $3,500 over old
plan)
Total Savings over 1
year: $7,100
($300 x 12 = $3,600 + $3,500 maternity savings)
Supplemental
Plans "to the rescue"
Their broker put a plan together to help them with their
larger deductibles using a combination of accident plans
and a hospital indemnity products. They chose a set
of plans that cost them just over $209/month
which give them the following:
Family Accident Coverage
$10,000 benefit is paid per accident per person for
each accident. They only have to pay a $100 deductible
per accident, then the coverage picks up the rest of the
bill for them. So the result is if they had, say a
$20,000 (or even a Million dollar bill) from an
accident, their supplemental plans below would kick in
and pay them thousands of dollars for the hospital stay
resulting from an accident.
Hospital Indemnity
Susan: gets $1,000 for being admitted in a
hospital, and $1,000 / day. She gets $2,000 / day in the
ICU.
Mike: gets $1,000 for being admitted in a
hospital and $1,00 / day. He gets $2,000 / day in the ICU.
(Note, they could have put Susan and the children on
a plan without Mike for $145/mo)
Summary
They saved $3,600 in premium over the next 12 months,
and will save another $3,500 when they deliver a baby
(compared to their current plan). They will reallocate
that money to purchase supplemental plans for $209/month
- for a total monthly outlay of much less than they are
paying now paying now. They have an ICU benefit, and
accidents covered 100% after a $100 deductible. And now
they have an HSA account set up that will give them tax
savings in the future.
